The Executive Commitee is pleased to announce the start of the Second MHS Photography Contest.

This year, we have some special prizes, including the top prize of a Minox TLX, as well as 2 pairs of Minox Binoculars and Monoculars, all courtesy of Thorsten Kortemeier and the Minox Corporation. And if you missed your opportunity to purchase the MHS EC, now you can win one.

This year, we are accepting photographs in 5 distinct categories.

Best Portfolio

A group of four or more pictures, entered in at least two different categories, and preferably including both black and white and color pictures.

People

Photographs whose primary focus is on human beings -- can be portraits, small groups, sports and other activities, but people must be the central interest.

Places

Pictures can be scenery, landscapes, cityscapes, or anything which has a sense of "place" about it. As an example, a closeup of part of a locomotive would be "things," while a train moving through the countryside would be "places."

Things

Not a person, not a landscape. Might be a closeup of a flower or the driving wheel of a steam locomotive. If you show a train in the mountains, that's a place. Your kid's right eye from 8" might be a "thing," instead of "people." The statue of Abe Lincoln at the Lincoln Memorial is "things", not people, but the memorial with the Mall around it would be places.

Abstract

A picture which isn't pictorial. Something where the viewer may have to stop and ask "what is this"? The abstraction can be in color, in form, in tonality or anything else. No composite photos. Computer modifications such as solarization are fine.

Contest rules and how to enter:

1) Photographs must have been taken with a camera using 8 x 11 film, regardless of camera brand or model. The contest is open to both members and non-members of the MHS. Keep in mind, membership to the MHS is now free of cost, so why not join today!
